Pearl Harbor, December 7th, 1941. Two eighteen-year-old boys, both residing near rivers and having romped the countryside as kids, both lacking father figures and both having bonded closely with their mothers, were just beginning their adult lives when World War II was declared; and both would join the Navy and serve in the Pacific Theater. And both would keep diaries documenting their patriotism, their doubts, their loves, and their fears.
Harold Kiel, from Thief River Falls, Minnesota, grew up under the guidance of his caring mother to become a compassionate, healthy, and capable young man. As a child, he dreamed of becoming a pilot, but less than perfect eyesight precluded joining the Army Air Corps. He signed up for the Navy instead, never imagining he’d be sailing into the largest naval battle in history and never imagining the horrors of war he would see.
Hayashi Ichizo, from Hakata, Japan, was described as a “peace-loving Christian and a cosmopolitan humanist.” Instead of enlisting in the dreaded Japanese Army, Hayashi allowed himself to be drafted into the Navy. Also, like many other high-achieving students, he was as-signed to pilot training, and he was “volunteered” to be a kamikaze suicide pilot.
Fate would bring these two men together one afternoon near Okinawa, Japan. One would not be going home to his mother.

Harold’s Voyage: Based on the WWII diaries of Harold Keil by M.D. Kincaid
Adventure Books, Hayden, Idaho
2014 200+ pages

Most of the story is taken from the WWII diaries of seaman Harold Kiel but it has supplements. There are comments on the conduct of the war in general some are details the Harold would not be privileged to know and others are notes based on letter from the other side, Hayashi Ichizo a young man of the same age as Harold who was drafted into the special attack forces as a Kamikaze pilot. The two meet in a battle near the end of the war. The physical horrors of the war are seen through the eyes of these two men. From them we can gleam an understand of men of war. Many then and today carry a heavy burden of what they have seen and done. We who did not see combat cannot truly understand but books like this help close the gap between their world and ours. It is truly a story worth hearing today just as is was almost seventy years ago when the ships were sinking and men were dying.
I read the eBook edition on my iPad and thus I did not have an accurate page count but the story is well written making it an easy read.

Harold Voyage Based on the WWII diaries of Harold Kiel eBook Kincaid MD Reviews

Harold's Voyage is an excellent depiction of the sacrifices made by our country's heroes. It should be mandatory material for our youth. Not only does Mr. Kincaid paint a picture of the life sacrifices of our men, he shows the irony of war in how sometimes the "enemy" is not always that much different than our own.
This book as the title suggests, is a true account of the trials and tribulations of the War in the Pacific during WWII. It is a perfect read for all those history buffs out there! I really liked the way he was able to weave in and out the personal sides from Harold's point of view as a young man from the U.S. and the Japanese from another young man of about the same age.....both having families and loved ones at home. It brought home the point that war is hell for all concerned! I consider it a great historical account from that time period!
Mr. Kincaid did an excellent job of incorporating the WWII diaries of Seaman Harold Kiel with some diary entries of Hayashi Ichizo, a Japanese Kamikaze pilot who died in the vicinity of Harold's ship, PCR (Patrol Craft Rescue) 851, as well as giving an overall good history of the battles in the Pacific. It was very obvious that Mr. Kincaid did extensive and thorough historical research. Seaman's Kiel wrote detailed diary entries, covering the gamut of the joy of receiving mail and ice cream to the horrors of war. Hayashi's diary entries were more reflective of his feelings of duty and honor of being selected to be a kamikaze pilot. Dispersed throughout the book are numerous historical and related photographs. This book is a good addition for WWII history buffs.
Harold Kiel's wartime diary is the basis for this book, but the addition of the kamikaze pilot's letters home and the pre-mission checklist provided a book that Harold told me he "picked up at 330 and couldn't put down until 930," when he finished the read. High praise from the guy who kept his diary for seventy years!

As we lose our World War II veterans (at a rate of ~1500 per day), it is worthwhile putting these stories to paper, so that we can remember the sacrifices and struggles of our elders at home and abroad. I continually feel that I am standing "on the shoulders of giants"; who will tell you that they simply stepped in and did what they could under the circumstances.
