The book also recommends top tours by theme and includes a special 'Only in' feature, highlighting a number of experiences or attractions that are unique to Tokyo. In addition, it has background information on food, drink and shopping, plus a Directory section with a clearly organised A-Z list of practical information and hotel and restaurant listings to suit all budgets. Very helpful during our time in Tokyo. This book (along with the friends we were visiting) was our only guide in Tokyo. The city map and subway maps were very helpful and the book was always with us. The city is huge, but it breaks things down into the main areas and popular tourist sites. The walking tours were nicely planned and the suggested route times were pretty accurate. Some tours were more interesting than others, as were food suggestions, but as with everything, it depends on personal preference. I hope to go back to Japan someday and finish the rest of the walking tours! (although not in the summer -- it was unbelievably hot and humid in July!!)Product details

Tokyo Step by Step Insight Guides 9789812821119 Books Reviews
I've checked all kinds of Toyko guidebooks and I finally found one that seems to be balanced when it comes to sightseeing in Tokyo. There is a top 10 list and the guidebooks focuses on all kinds of aspects.
The city is split in 12 self-guided walks and it also features 4 self-guided day trips. What's so amazing about it? The detail used to explain each walk without overwhelming you with information. There are walks for those interested in culture, technology, fashion, history, art, food, nature, etc. Routes and maps are very detailed as well as information about the distance and the time each walk requires. In addition, the starting/ending point of each walk is a subway station and all the logistics seem to be very well explained.
An A through Z practicality chapter and facts about japanese culture complement the guidebook along with beautiful, color pictures on each page. There are enough restaurants, shops, clubs and bars suggestions, but unlike other brands, they don't take half the guidebook. Sightseeing is the priority and each walk also includes recommendations as to where to take a break, eat or drink something.
All in all, a perfect guidebook. A bit big, but thin enough to make it very light. I keep reading it and reading it and getting excited about planning my trip to Tokyo.
Tokyo is such a huge and amazing city, and all this guidebook can come up with is the same old standard set of boring locations, presented in a drab and impersonal manner without any recommendations or preferences whatsoever. It also has a very confusing layout and very brief descriptions of the sights. I can't believe I dragged this thing around with me.
It might be OK for the 1st-time visitor, but if you know Tokyo a bit, I think you will agree with me that this guidebook is weak.
Useless book. For example, it directs you to a big building, Tokyo Opera City "a 54-floor complex of shops, offices and restaurants. . . .[where] you are likely to find the most interesting part of the complex to be the NTT Intercommunicaton Centre . . . . ., an attractive, high-tech exhibition space, with an electronic library and internet cafe." I suspect 50 of the 54 floors are devoted to offices and the Intercommunication Centre is a complete bust. Some pretentious, avant-garde projections in various darkened rooms. I was the ONLY one there in the middle of the afternoon and soon left myself. This kind of misdescription happens frequently with this book. If it's free, it's overpriced.
